FAQ
General Questions About Night Vision
-
What is night vision? Night vision refers to the ability to see in low-light conditions, either through biological adaptation (as in some animals) or with the help of technology, such as night vision devices.
-
How does night vision work? Night vision works by enhancing the available light (such as moonlight or starlight) to make objects visible. This can be done through image intensification, thermal imaging, or infrared illumination.
-
What are night vision goggles? Night vision goggles (NVGs) are wearable devices that use image intensification to help the user see in the dark. They are commonly used by military and law enforcement personnel.
-
How far can you see with night vision goggles? The range of night vision goggles depends on the device's quality and the available light. High-end military-grade NVGs can see up to several hundred yards, while commercial-grade devices may have a shorter range.
-
Can night vision devices work in complete darkness? Thermal imaging devices can work in complete darkness since they rely on heat signatures. Image intensification devices, however, require some light to function. In total darkness, they need an infrared illuminator.

What is the difference between Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 night vision devices?
- Gen 1: Basic level, amplifies available light by around 1,000 times, shorter range.
- Gen 2: Improved resolution and sensitivity, amplifies light by around 20,000 times, better performance in low-light conditions.
- Gen 3: Advanced level, uses gallium arsenide for the photocathode, amplifies light by around 30,000-50,000 times, superior clarity and range.
-
What are NNVT image intensifier tubes? Northern Night Vision Technologies is a subsidiary of the Norinco group in China. They produce various imaging products such as the NNVT IITs. These Gen 2+ tubes are modelled after older Photonis technology and have comparable performance to the XR5 tubes in our testing. NNVT tubes range from 1400FOM to 2000FOM depending on each tube's particular specs.
-
Where are our night vision products from? Our night vision monoculars use NNVT tubes, Chinese OEM housings and glass. These are then assembled in Australia and shipped out to our customers throughout the country. We've put our own personal units through real world testing to ensure its reliability and we're confident that NNVT NVDs offer the best blend of price and performance for the entry level user.
